Ratamba Stew – Captain Sisko’s Recipe

8 Apr

So what do you serve for a main course following Odo’s bruschetta on First Contact Day? How about some hearty, vegan stew! After all, we’ll be eating replicated food in the future – none of which is composed of animal products. This stew comes courtesy of Captain Sisko, who was the badass in charge of Star Trek’s space station Deep Space 9.

Want the recipe to make Romulan Ale to accompany this stew? Watch out, it’s rather potent: simply mix equal parts of spiced rum, vodka and blue curaco in a glass with a few ice cubes. That’s it! Strong and pungent. Be careful with this one.

Romulan Ale! Just don’t get caught with it.

Apologies for the awful lighting. See yesterday’s post with “Red Alert” lights!

Ratamba Stew
Serves 6

  • 1 28 oz can diced stewed tomatoes
  • 1 C tomato juice (low sodium)
  • 1/2 C water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, diced
  • 4 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 jalapeños, diced
  • 2 cans of beans (I used 1 each of pinto and black beans)
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil or Italian seasoning

Dump everything into your slow cooker and stir well to combine.

Turn it on to high and cook for 4-6 hours, or low and cook for 8-10 hours.

Stir once or twice while it cooks if you’re home, but don’t worry about it if you’re not.

Alternatively, saute veggies in a large pot in the oil until translucent. Add the tomatoes, liquids, beans and spices. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer covered for 45-60 minutes. (This is an estimate – cook until it’s to your liking!)

Serve hot with French bread, rice, noodles or on its own.
