Boozy Hot Cocoa

2 Dec

Christmastime is upon us! I prefer to wait until AFTER Thanksgiving before diving into all things Christmas. Which means that this past weekend, we decorated the apartment with lights and ornaments, to the tunes of Christmas favorites, and even put on Jingle All The Way! What goes perfectly with these activities? Hot cocoa, of course! And what’s the only way to make hot cocoa even better? By adding booze. (If you’re old enough, mind you).

Rather than sipping on cocoa that comes in an envelope and tastes more of chemical than chocolate, grab a few simple ingredients, throw them in a pot to warm up, and get drinking! I used spiced rum, but bourbon, brandy or even peppermint schnapps would go well in this tasty drink.

Serves 2

  • 2 C nondairy milk
  • 1 packet stevia (or other sweetener)
  • 5 tsp cocoa powder (NOT tablespoons!)
  • 5-6 tbsp spiced rum
  • 1/3 C semi-sweet chocolate chips

In a small sauce pot over medium heat, combine all ingredients. Whisk constantly for 5 whole minutes. Taste and adjust as necessary. Pour into winter-themed mugs, and enjoy!

What’s your favorite drink to accompany holiday decorating?
